Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The file is read, decoded and re-encoded by your own browser using the WebCodecs API, which talks to the video chip in your machine. Nothing leaves your device, so there is no upload wait and no size limit imposed by us.
Which formats can I open?
MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV containers. The codec inside also has to be one your browser can decode — H.264, VP9 and AV1 are safe. Very old codecs such as MPEG-2, DivX or WMV are not supported.
MP4 or WebM — which should I pick?
MP4 with H.264 opens on practically anything: phones, TVs, messaging apps, editing software. WebM with VP9 gives a smaller file at the same quality and is ideal for a web page, but some older players and apps will not touch it.
Does converting make my video worse?
Any re-encode loses a little, which is why the default here is to keep the original quality — the loss is then negligible. If you want a smaller file rather than a different format, the video compressor is the better tool.
Why is MP4 greyed out or switched to WebM?
Because that particular browser build cannot encode H.264. Chromium builds without the proprietary codecs are the usual reason. Chrome, Edge and Safari can all produce MP4.
